Insurance and the deposit are the two things that โ quite rightly โ worry people most when renting a car. Understand them properly and you avoid unpleasant surprises both at the counter and when you return the car. Here is a simple, jargon-free breakdown.
What is always included: third-party liability
Every rental car in Morocco is covered at a minimum by third-party liability insurance: it pays for damage you might cause to others (another vehicle, people, property). This is the legal baseline, included in the rental price.
Damage to the rental car: CDW and excess
Next comes damage and theft cover, often called CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) or LDW. It limits your liability if the rental vehicle is damaged or stolen. The crucial point: it almost always comes with an excess โ the amount you still pay in the event of a claim. This excess can be high (up to several thousand dirhams), as guides to renting in Morocco point out.
The excess waiver: is it worth taking?
To reduce โ or eliminate โ that excess, rental companies offer an excess waiver option (often a few dozen dirhams/euros per day). It buys real peace of mind, especially on a long road trip. Do read the usual exclusions, though: tyres, wheels, underbody, glass and mirrors are not always covered, even with the waiver. Our advice: ask precisely what you would still be liable for and get it noted in writing.
The deposit (security hold)
The deposit is an amount held for the duration of the rental to cover any damage not otherwise paid for. On the market, it often runs from the equivalent of 1,000 to 2,000 โฌ, via a pre-authorisation on a bank card in the driver's name, in line with standard agency practice. It is released on return if the vehicle comes back in good condition. The amount depends on the vehicle category; ask for it in advance.
The right habits for total peace of mind
- Do the condition report with the agent at pick-up: photograph every scratch and have it noted on the contract. It is your best protection when you return the car.
- Check the spare wheel, the jack and the fluid levels (see our pre-drive checklist).
- Keep the contract and the assistance contact details in the car; in the event of an accident, notify the agency immediately and complete an accident report form.
- Keep your evidence (photos, accident report): it makes settling any claim far easier.
