A well-maintained rental car is the foundation — and at R2Y CAR, every vehicle is checked and cleaned before handover. Even so, taking five minutes for a quick walk-around before you set off is always a good habit, especially ahead of a long journey. Here is our checklist.
1. Tyres (safety point number one)
Tyres are the only points of contact between the car and the road: correct pressure is essential for grip and braking. Road safety authorities recommend checking tyre pressure at least once a month and before every long trip, because under-inflation increases braking distances, fuel consumption and the risk of a blowout at high speed, as noted in the official road safety guidance and these practical road safety fact sheets. Also give the tyres a visual once-over for wear (tread indicators) and any bulges; the recommended pressure is usually shown on a label inside the driver's door.
2. Brakes and fluid levels
On your first braking, the pedal should feel firm and the car should stop in a straight line. A glance at the dashboard on start-up is usually enough: no warning light should stay on (oil, battery, engine, ABS, tyre pressure).
3. Air conditioning and wipers
In Morocco, air conditioning that blows properly cold is no luxury. Test it, along with the wipers and the screen wash, before you leave.
4. Lights
Headlights, indicators, brake lights, hazard lights: a quick lap of the car lets you confirm everything works. Good for your safety, and it spares you any trouble at a roadside check.
5. Spare wheel and paperwork
Make sure the spare wheel (or puncture repair kit) and the jack are on board. Keep the vehicle documents with you (registration card, insurance certificate), plus your rental contract, driving licence and a piece of ID — see our complete guide. Finally, note down the 24/7 assistance number: at R2Y CAR, we answer at any hour, by phone or WhatsApp.
6. The condition report: your best protection
Before you drive off, walk around the bodywork with the agent: note and photograph any existing scratch, and have it recorded on the contract. That is what prevents any misunderstanding when you return the car — a point we cover in detail in our article on insurance and deposits.
