Automatic or manual gearbox: which one for your rental car?

Published 04/07/2026 · 7 min read

It's the first question many of our customers ask: should you rent a car with an automatic gearbox or a manual gearbox? There is no wrong answer — it depends on what you're used to and where you're driving. Here's everything you need to make an informed choice.

How it works, in a nutshell

With a manual gearbox, you select the gears yourself using the clutch and the gear lever. With an automatic gearbox, the car changes gear on its own according to speed and acceleration: there is no clutch pedal, just the accelerator and the brake. The technologies vary (torque converter, dual-clutch, CVT), but from the driver's seat the principle is the same: you focus on the road.

The manual gearbox

The manual transmission remains the most common in Morocco. Its strengths: rentals are often cheaper, you get fine control over the engine, and real command in the mountains, where engine braking (shifting down to slow the car without overheating the brakes) is invaluable on the long descents of the Atlas or the Rif. On the other hand, it takes practice, especially in big-city traffic jams where you spend all your time working the clutch.

The automatic gearbox

The automatic is gaining ground, and for good reason. It brings real comfort in urban traffic (no more clutch juggling) and on long journeys, where you arrive less tired. It's the ideal choice if you're not used to a manual, if you mostly drive in town, or simply if you want to enjoy the scenery with peace of mind. Historically, automatics used a little more fuel; modern gearboxes (often with 6, 7 or 8 speeds, or dual-clutch designs) have largely closed the gap, and some even beat the manual. The trade-off: rental rates are generally a little higher.
