Diesel, petrol, hybrid: behind these words lie, above all, differences in fuel consumption and budget. Here is how to make sense of it all for your rental, jargon-free — with pump prices so you can compare in real terms.
Fuel prices in Morocco
In Morocco, fuel prices are deregulated and revised regularly (roughly twice a month). As a guide, on 1 July 2026, diesel cost around 12.6 DH per litre and unleaded petrol around 13.8 DH per litre, according to pump-price reports (check the current figure on an up-to-date price tracker). Diesel is therefore consistently cheaper than petrol — a key point if you plan to cover a lot of ground.
Diesel
Diesel remains king over long distances. Diesel engines sip fuel and deliver plenty of torque, which is a pleasure in the mountains and on the motorway. Combined with a lower price per litre, it is the most economical fuel as soon as you plan on serious mileage — a road trip to the desert, for example. Quick sum: on a Fez–Merzouga round trip (~950 km) in a car burning 6 L/100 km, diesel works out at roughly 720 DH of fuel, versus noticeably more on petrol at the same consumption.
Petrol (unleaded)
Petrol engines are smoother, quieter when cold and often cheaper to buy, which can be reflected in the rental rate. They are ideal for city driving and moderate journeys. Over very long distances they use a little more fuel than diesel, but the difference remains reasonable for a touring holiday.
Hybrid
A hybrid pairs a petrol engine with an electric motor that takes over at low speed. The result: lower fuel consumption in town and a very smooth drive, without ever having to plug in (a "classic" hybrid recharges itself as you drive, recovering energy under braking). It is an excellent comfort-versus-economy compromise for urban and suburban use. In a nutshell
- Lots of open road / the desert: diesel, the most economical over long hauls (cheaper per litre and frugal).
- Mostly city driving: petrol or hybrid, smoother and often cheaper to rent.
- Comfort and low consumption in town come first: hybrid.
