Picking the right time of year changes everything on a trip to Morocco, especially inland in cities like Fez. Between scorching summers and chilly winters, two seasons clearly stand out. Here is our month-by-month climate guide so you travel at the best possible moment.
Fez has a continental climate
Unlike the coastal cities tempered by the ocean, Fez has a markedly continental climate: dry, very hot summers and cold, rainy winters, as described in climate profiles of Fez. That wide range is exactly why the season you choose matters so much for enjoying both the medina and the open road.
The best times to go: spring and autumn
The two best windows for visiting Fez and inland Morocco are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), with pleasant temperatures for walking the medina and driving, according to advice on when to visit Fez. May-June and September-October are particularly mild.
The seasons at a glance
- Spring (March-May): ideal. Green landscapes, gentle days (April ~8-21 °C, May ~11-25 °C). The best time to combine city and road trip.
- Summer (June-August): very hot inland, with frequent spikes above 40 °C in Fez, Meknes and Marrakech. If you come in summer, plan your sightseeing for early morning and late afternoon, and head for the cooler heights (Ifrane, Middle Atlas). Avoid the desert at the height of summer.
- Autumn (September-November): excellent. September stays warm (~15-30 °C), October is delightful (~12-25 °C). Perfect for the medina and the road.
- Winter (December-February): cool to cold (lows around 3 °C), rainy at times, with snow in the mountains (Ifrane is actually a ski resort!). The medinas are still a pleasure to explore — just dress warmly.
These temperature reference points come from seasonal data for Fez and local weather monitoring.
Depending on your plans
- Medina and imperial cities: spring or autumn, so you can walk without wilting in the heat.
- Desert (Merzouga): October to April, when days are bearable and nights cool but comfortable (see our desert guide).
- Mountains (Ifrane, Atlas): lovely in spring and summer (a welcome dose of cool air), snow-covered in winter.
A word about Ramadan
During the month of Ramadan, daily life slows down during daylight hours and many shops and restaurants shorten their opening times or close until sunset, as noted in guides to Morocco's seasons. It is no obstacle to travelling — the atmosphere on iftar evenings, when the fast is broken, is truly magical — but it is worth planning around. The dates shift every year (lunar calendar): check them for the year of your trip.
In a nutshell
For Fez and inland Morocco, aim for spring or autumn: that is when the medina, the road and the desert are at their very best. Once your dates are set, book your car and off you go — our big road trip guide will help you build the itinerary.
