Morocco road trip budget: fuel, tolls and tips to pay less

A road trip through Morocco is still a very affordable adventure — as long as you plan for the main expenses: fuel, tolls and a little logistics. Here is how to estimate your driving budget, plus a few tricks to trim it, with real numbers to back it up.

The currency: the dirham

Morocco's currency is the Moroccan dirham (MAD / DH). It is exchanged and withdrawn locally (it cannot be taken out of the country), so carry cash for tolls, small petrol stations and rural areas, where cards are not always accepted. ATMs are easy to find in towns and cities.

Fuel: your biggest expense

Fuel is the item that weighs most on a road trip. As a guide, on 1 July 2026 diesel cost around 12.6 DH per litre and petrol around 13.8 DH per litre, according to fuel price monitoring. Prices are unregulated and revised regularly (roughly twice a month), so check them just before you set off. To estimate your budget, use this simple formula: total distance ÷ 100 × consumption (L/100 km) × price per litre. For example, a Fez–Merzouga round trip (~950 km) in a diesel car burning 6 L/100 km works out at roughly 950 ÷ 100 × 6 × 12.6 ≈ 720 DH of fuel. Diesel — cheaper and more frugal — is the most economical choice over long distances.

Motorway tolls

Morocco's motorways are toll roads (operated by ADM), but the charges stay modest for a car: for instance 25 DH between Casablanca and Rabat, or 14 to 17 DH between Fez and Meknes, according to the official toll schedule. A long run such as Fez–Casablanca comes to around 90 DH. You pay in cash at each toll plaza, or with the Jawaz electronic tag. The ADM Trafic route planner gives the exact toll for any journey.
