Electric cars are making headlines in Morocco, driven by an ambitious national strategy and a booming automotive industry. But what does that mean in practice when you want to hit the road today? Here is an honest, numbers-based snapshot.
A charging network that is still young
The country still has only a little over 600 public charging points, concentrated in Casablanca, Rabat, Marrakech, Tangier and Agadir, according to le360. Surveys count roughly 1,500 AC chargers (slow to semi-fast charging) and fewer than 100 rapid DC chargers across the whole country, according to this guide to electric cars in Morocco. In other words: rapid charging — the kind that gets you back on the road in 30-40 minutes on a long trip — remains scarce and concentrated on a handful of routes.
A clear course set for the years ahead
The momentum is real. The national electric mobility strategy targets 10,000 charging points by 2030 (up from around 800 today), with interim milestones such as 2,500 public chargers by 2026, according to this 2026 guide and the business press. A network is also being rolled out along the motorways. But while the infrastructure is being built, a long 100% electric journey still means planning your charging stops in advance.
Why hybrid is the smart choice in 2026
This is where the hybrid comes into its own. It uses little fuel, especially in town, glides silently at low speed… and never needs to be plugged in: it recharges itself as you drive, recovering energy under braking. You enjoy a share of the benefits of electric motoring (efficiency, smoothness) without the constraint of charging points. For a trip that mixes city driving and long distances in Morocco, it is currently the best compromise — as we explain in our comparison Diesel, petrol or hybrid.
And at R2Y CAR?
We evolve our fleet in step with the charging network and with what our customers want. If a hybrid model interests you, ask us about availability for your dates. In the meantime, our recent petrol and diesel engines remain the safest choice for exploring the country without worrying about charging. To plan your fuel budget, see our road trip budget guide.
